Neuropsychology is the study of brain functioning and how it influences cognition and behavior. Neuropsychologists are doctoral level, licensed psychologists with extensive training in functional neuroanatomy, neurological disorders, and the wide array of brain and other nervous system conditions.
When seeing a patient facing cognitive issues not yet diagnosed, a neuropsychologist:
In cases where an issue has already been identified, our work at Union Square Practice might include assessing the effects of medical treatment the patient has received, monitoring recovery from an injury, or offering a second opinion after unsuccessful interventions elsewhere.

Why have a neuropsychology division in our practice? We tailor every treatment plan to the individual person, and in many cases neuropsychological evaluations are invaluable for gaining a more complete understanding of our clients’ treatment needs. While therapy and psychiatry assess and respond to emotional and behavioral symptoms, neuropsychology deals with objective data about cognitive functioning. In situations where there might be a complex interplay between psychology and neurology, the neuropsychological evaluation helps us pinpoint more precisely what’s going on.
For example, one client’s depression symptoms might reflect stressful life circumstances, emotional trauma, negative thought patterns, or other issues typically addressed through therapy and medication management. For a different client, depression symptoms point to issues in the neuropsychological realm, such as cognitive impairment from an undiagnosed learning disability or the long-term effects of a head injury. For a third client, it’s a mix of things from both categories. Each of these situations suggests different avenues of approach.
Union Square Practice is a group of psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists who empower individuals to be the best versions of themselves using the latest science has to offer.
