Chen Zhang

LMHC

I am a licensed mental health counselor specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of adults with depression, anxiety disorders, and histories of complex trauma. My treatment approach is person-centered and emphasizes unconditional positive regard. I teach my clients evidence-based skills rooted in cognitive behavior therapy, and I work through a biopsychosocial and multicultural lens, accounting for the interconnectedness of cultural, biological, physical, and social factors in a person’s mental health

While I have training and knowledge in psychology and wellness, I believe my clients are the experts on their own lives. I view a person’s beliefs and actions as responses to their environment, and I ask my clients a lot of questions to better understand their background and experiences. I challenge them to examine existing beliefs that aren’t serving their health and growth, and we collaborate to create solutions that fit their individual situations and values.

What should I expect in our first session?

In our first session I will be learning about your personal history, relationships, any past treatment you’ve received, and what brought you to therapy. After getting to know you and understanding your goals, I’ll share my recommendations and answer any questions you have. My objective is to collaborate with you on a treatment plan that fits your individual circumstances and priorities.

What research areas are you interested in?

I am interested in understanding the biological heterogeneity of mental health diagnoses—the ways in which many different biological factors can contribute to a mental health condition. My research uses neuroimaging data to study the neurobiological basis of psychology with the ultimate goal of improving the effectiveness of psychiatric treatments.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

I love building relationships with clients and understanding their thought processes, how they see the world, and how they perceive and understand different aspects of their lives.

What is a self-care ritual you practice?

I use time blocking, making sure I work or run errands only within a certain time period. During my personal time, I work on detaching myself completely from my obligations and doing things that bring me joy.
