Nana Asabere

MD

I am a double-board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist. I combine expertise in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy to deliver comprehensive mental health care. I specialize in mood and anxiety disorders, OCD, trauma, ADHD, and culturally responsive care for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and LGBTQ+ communities. I am also an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

What should I expect in our first session?

At our first session, you’ll have space to share your story without judgment. I aim to get to know you as a person beyond diagnostic labels, and to understand your unique challenges and goals. I’ll start with an in-depth interview about your childhood, life experiences, relationships, personality, and medical or psychiatric history. After evaluating the specifics of your situation, we’ll collaborate on a treatment plan, which may involve medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two.

How do you describe your therapeutic approach?

I approach my practice with authentic communication, evidence-based strategies, and culturally informed care. My goal is to help you move beyond just day-to-day “managing” or “surviving” to authentic thriving and a life full of meaning, purpose, and joy.

What do you specialize in?

I primarily treat mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, and ADHD through a combination of medication and psychotherapy. I am particularly interested in life transitions and supporting identity development and well-being in minoritized communities.

What research areas are you interested in?

My research centers on family- and community-based interventions that nurture positive identity development, self-esteem, and self-efficacy in Black and Brown youth. These interventions foster young people’s connection to their racial, ethnic, and cultural identities, empowering them to thrive emotionally and psychologically even amidst systemic factors that devalue marginalized populations.

What is a self-care ritual you practice?

Mindfulness, meditation, and spending time in nature are essential practices that help me stay grounded and balanced.
