Sarah Piscitelli

LMHC

I am a licensed mental health counselor dedicated to helping individuals better understand themselves, develop self-compassion, and achieve meaningful personal growth. I have expertise in anxiety treatment and extensive experience working with family members whose loved ones face mental health challenges. My approach is compassionate and informed, using evidence-based behavioral therapies and mindfulness practices to support my clients in gaining significant life skills and improving their overall well-being.

What should I expect in our first session?

You can expect to feel heard and empowered. This first meeting focuses on mutual learning: we’ll explore your goals and any challenges you’re facing, and I’ll introduce you to my background and approach. Together, we’ll talk through options and next steps, with you being in the “driver’s seat” of the decision-making.

How do you describe your therapeutic approach?

My approach is grounded in evidence-based techniques including CBT, DBT, and mindfulness. I tailor each session to meet my clients’ unique needs, helping them to explore thoughts and feelings, learn new skills, problem-solve, develop self-compassion, and take actionable steps toward their goals.

What do you specialize in?

I specialize in working with individuals struggling with anxiety (including panic), relational issues, or feeling “stuck” in their lives. I also have a special focus on supporting family members who have a loved one experiencing mental health challenges.

What inspired you to get into counseling?

As a teenager, I began volunteering with a mental health organization that supports individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) by empowering their families with knowledge and interpersonal strategies. I had great mentorship there and became energized by the idea of making an impact at the individual, family, and community level. Over 15 years later, I feel privileged to split my time between counseling clients at Union Square Practice and working with the New York Psychiatric Institute, where I help implement evidence-based programs for young people throughout the state who are experiencing psychosis.

What’s something your clients might be surprised to learn about you?

I have traveled to nearly every U.S. state by RV! Exploring the country up close has helped me appreciate its beauty, diversity, and complexity. I’m still aiming to check off all 50 states—Hawaii is next on my list!
