Counseling in New York

The foundation of our treatment plans is expert one-on-one psychotherapy. People seek therapy for many reasons, most commonly because they feel unhappy, anxious, depressed, or stuck. Sometimes there’s an underlying mood, anxiety, or cognitive disorder that makes their life inexplicably difficult. Sometimes it’s trauma, family issues, or career-related stress. Often it’s a combination of several things, calling for a multi-faceted approach.

With more than 60 mental health professionals operating in dozens of fields and specialties, Union Square Practice is ready to partner with you in your journey to feeling happier, healthier, and more fulfilled in your daily life. We see clients via telehealth throughout New York State, and NYC clients can meet with us in person in our offices near Midtown Manhattan.

How can therapy help me?

Whether you’re wrestling with overwhelming emotions, undergoing a big life transition, or just feeling discouraged, therapy can offer key support. The purpose of therapy is to help you move from wherever you are to where you want to be. This process looks different for everyone, which is why we take a highly personalized approach to serving our clients.

People going to therapy might state their reasons as any of the following, or something else entirely:

  • I want to feel happier.
  • I want to hack my brain to be more productive.
  • I want to build healthy habits that stick.
  • I want to be a better friend/partner/colleague/parent.
  • I want to move past burnout to find new motivation.
  • I want to feel calmer and more in control.
  • I want to figure out what’s causing my depression.
  • I want to learn to let go and move on.
  • I want to get out of bed each morning excited for my day.

Therapy can work towards any of these objectives and many more. A great therapist helps you explore and articulate your priorities, then selects evidence-based therapy methods that align with your goals and personality. At Union Square Practice, we take a thorough, systematic approach to finding out how we can best serve you. Because therapy is about you, our purpose is to help you identify your own goals, then offer you the best possible tools, resources, and support throughout your journey to achieving them.

What types of issues does therapy address?

You do not need to be diagnosed with anything in order to benefit from therapy. However, some clients know or suspect that there’s an underlying mental health condition, neuropsychological issue, or other underlying cause contributing to their distress or concern. In these cases it’s helpful to pin down exactly what’s going on. Here are some of the issues and situations our therapists address with clients:

We also offer therapy for concerns specific to certain populations:

Whether or not you see yourself reflected in these lists, reach out for a consultation. We’d love to discuss your situation and treatment hopes and see how we can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started with therapy?

When you first contact Union Square Practice, you’ll speak to one of our clinical coordinators. They’ll listen to your concerns and priorities and suggest a therapist in our practice they think is likely to be a good match for you. Your therapist, possibly in collaboration with others on our team, does the following:

  • Conducts a comprehensive evaluation
  • Understands your context and priorities
  • Provides a diagnosis, if this is relevant
  • Recommends a treatment plan
  • Sets goals collaboratively with you
  • Works with you regularly to achieve those goals

We believe the right practitioner/client match is key to establishing a supportive and productive therapeutic relationship, and will work with you to find a good personality fit.

We want you to find a therapist you connect with. During your initial assessment, our clinical coordinators will suggest USP practitioners who might be a good match for you based on the information you provide us. If you want to get a head start, go ahead and read our team bios to find out more about each of our practitioners, including their training, specialties, experience, and approach to providing care.

Not every therapist or therapeutic approach is right for everyone. Fortunately, our community of practitioners is in ongoing conversation, exchanging information and learning from each other. This lets them collaborate with you and each other to find the best personality fit and best therapeutic approaches for you.

There’s no one best type of therapy, and what works for one of our clients doesn’t necessarily work for another. People respond to therapy methods differently based on their context, personality, and goals. Therapeutic modalities are tools in a tool box, and the right tool depends on the task and the situation.

As a cross-specialty team, we bring together expertise in an array of therapeutic approaches. These include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), art therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness practices, motivational interviewing, psychodynamic therapy, Supportive Psychotherapy, and more. We also offer performance and mindset coaching.

Every mental health treatment plan at Union Square Practice is a blend of strategies tailored to the individual client. Your therapist’s first goal is to get to know you and find out what you hope to get out of therapy. When they’ve gathered enough information, they’ll propose an approach and talk it through with you. Our priority is always to ensure you are fully informed and feel comfortable with our treatment approach.

Union Square Practice is a unique community of 60+ diverse mental health experts deeply integrated across disciplines to provide the most comprehensive and effective mental health treatment in NYC. Our structure, values, and practices set us apart:

  • We have the right people. Our team is exceptionally diverse in our identities, life experiences, and unique clinical contributions. Together we have the collective resources to respond to each client with creativity, sensitivity, and appropriate professional treatment recommendations.
  • We operate with shared values. Each USP clinician is hired for their training, expertise, and specialty fit  — but also for their commitment to delivering practical, evidence-based treatment with warmth, compassion, and a sense of humor. We believe that a genuine human connection with our clients is as non-negotiable as clinical expertise.
  • We see you as a person, not a problem. We don’t treat a condition: we treat the whole person, taking the time to understand your struggles and your priorities. Then, drawing on our diverse community resources, we create a holistic, personalized treatment strategy and continue to fine-tune it to fit you.
  • Our practice is fully integrated. With credentialed psychologists, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and social workers under one roof, we collaborate closely on each client’s care. Your psychotherapy, medication management, and any additional treatment are integrated thoughtfully and evolve alongside your changing needs.

Whatever mental health challenges you’re facing, we’re excited to meet you and find out how we can help you live your best life.

Many clients make great mental health progress with psychotherapy alone. Other times, your initial consultation or ongoing discoveries in therapy will suggest additional approaches. We understand that the decision to pursue treatment beyond talk therapy is a highly personal one, and we support you to choose what’s right for you. We’re excited to offer a wide spectrum of expert evaluation services and non-invasive, evidence-based treatments for interested clients.
