Thoughtful counseling for grief and bereavement in New York and beyond

Losing a loved one to death is a uniquely painful experience, and bereavement can affect all dimensions of a person’s life: social, mental, physical, and spiritual. Grief extends far beyond the funeral or memorial, but life’s responsibilities continue, often making it difficult to process and move through complex emotions. Therapy for bereavement carves out regular space to address a profound loss, facilitate healthy grieving, honor the deceased, discover coping methods, and even find joy as you rebuild your life.

Union Square Practice offers expert counseling for grief and bereavement at our offices in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, as well as by telehealth across New York State.

Symptoms Associated with Grief

Grief comes in many forms, and emotional states can fluctuate unpredictably in the wake of the loss. Each individual’s unique grief experience is shaped by factors such as the nature of the relationship with the deceased, circumstances of death, cultural and religious beliefs, and personal coping style. In addition to the standard sorrow we associate with bereavement, any or all of these emotions are common responses to losing someone to death:

  • Anger. It’s normal to experience feelings ranging from rage to resentment to frustration in the wake of the loss, whether they are directed at yourself, the deceased, other people, a higher power, or the circumstances surrounding the death.
  • Guilt. Death frequently sparks feelings of regret or guilt. Grieving people find themselves plagued by thoughts of missed opportunities, wishing they had done things differently, and even blaming themselves for the loss or some aspect of it.
  • Emptiness. People who have lost someone close to them often feel as if a piece of them is gone and can never be replaced.
  • Loneliness. On top of missing the lost person, grief can be a deeply isolating experience, including a feeling of disconnection from others and an inclination to withdraw socially.
  • Numbness. While some people immediately experience strong emotion at a profound loss, others naturally respond with numbness, detachment, or disbelief.
  • Fear. Grief can include deep anxiety about how to cope with life without your loved one.
  •

In cases where the relationship with the deceased person was also difficult or conflicted, the grieving process can bring especially confusing mixes of emotions. Whether the grief is straightforward or complex, it can be helpful to explore these responses in a space of judgment-free support.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are as many experiences of grief as there are grieving people, so the exact shape of bereavement counseling will depend largely on the individual. We listen closely to understand what you need from us, and stay responsive as those needs evolve. We help our clients:

  • Express their complex reactions to loss, without fear of judgment
  • Process and understand their unique combination of emotional responses
  • Accept and respect the validity of each facet of their grief experience
  • Find effective coping strategies for reintegrating and navigating daily life
  • Honor their loved one through meaningful acts or rituals
  • Create opportunities for experiencing joy and connection alongside the grief
  • Address any growing mental health concerns, such as depression or anxiety

What you seek in counseling will often change as things progress. We are here to collaborate with you on practical steps, facilitate you to explore your experience more deeply, or just provide a listening ear as needed.

The grieving process does not follow set stages or a linear path, so support needs are hard to predict. Counseling for bereavement can be relatively short-term in some cases, while in others long-term support is essential. As you become steadier, you might reduce the frequency of your sessions to feel out whether it’s time to move on or if continued counseling is valuable for you.
