Affirming group therapy for neurodivergent individuals in NYC

Union Square Practice group therapist Liliana Valvano offers two different weekly, in-person group therapy sessions at our offices in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. In group, you can connect with other neurodivergent and/or LGBTQIA+ adults in therapeutic spaces where neurodivergent experiences are centered and celebrated.

Groups

Neurodivergent-Centered DBT

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was created by a psychologist with lived experience of mental health difficulties to help people struggling with their mental health to live full lives. DBT has distinct modules that focus on distress tolerance, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. My adapted version of DBT focuses on the experiences of neurodivergent people (primarily ASD & ADHD), with an emphasis on understanding one’s neurodivergent traits, sensory regulation, learning to unmask and navigate social situations authentically, dealing with sensory overload, meltdown, shutdown, burnout, and finding self acceptance and pride in neurodivergence!

This group meets on Thursdays, 4:30-6:30 pm, in person in NYC.

Diverge

Diverge is a facilitated discussion, process, and education group focused on understanding all aspects of what it means to be autistic. This includes conceptualizations of disability/neurodivergence, ableism and systemic bias, social masking, and “coming out” as autistic. We also discuss various autistic experiences such as stimming, special interests, interoception, alexithymia, executive functioning, and more. The purpose of this group is to gain a better understanding of what it means to be autistic, connect with other autistic people, unpack internalized ableism, and build a sense of pride in autistic selfhood. Formal diagnosis is not required to join this group.

Diverge meets on Tuesdays, 5:30-6:30 pm, in person in NYC.

What to know about neurodivergent-centered group therapy

  • Adults ages 18+ who are able to independently navigate managing and attending group sessions without parent or caregiver involvement. At this time, collaboration with parents/families is not available. Members must manage all communications independently.
  • Adults who are verbally fluent and do not have co-occurring intellectual disability.
  • Adults who identify as LGBTQIA+ or are comfortable and able to be respectful in predominantly LGBTQIA+ spaces.
  • For DBT, adults are required to have a preexisting individual therapist or psychiatrist with whom I can collaborate.

Formal autism diagnosis is not required to join.

  1. Reach out to the clinical coordinating team to schedule a brief screening call. They will get you set up in our system and go over billing and group policies.
  2. After your screening call, Liliana Valvano will reach out to you via email to set up a 1-hour individual intake appointment. This can be done over zoom or in person. During this session, you and Liliana will determine if our groups are a good fit for you. If you have any group-specific questions you’d like to ask before setting up an intake appointment, email liliana.valvano@unionsquarepractice.com
  3. Show up and join in!
