Therapy for Fear of Flying

Counseling and treatment for the fear of flying

An estimated 25 million Americans have flying-related fears. Some people are able to fly and simply experience discomfort, while those with more severe flying phobias avoid air travel altogether. Extreme fear of flying can prevent people from traveling on vacation, visiting loved ones, and pursuing their ideal career and education opportunities.

At Union Square Practice, we used evidence-based treatments to help clients conquer their fear of flying and open up a new world of travel options. We offer expert aviophobia therapy in person in Manhattan and via telehealth across New York State.

What causes fear of flying?

It’s not surprising that this phobia is so common, given that air travel combines multiple widespread sources of anxiety into one situation. Fear of flying, called aviophobia, takes various forms and may include any mixture of the following:

  • Fear of crashing. Numerous dramatic media portrayals of plane crashes help drive the most common flying fear, even though commercial air travel is one of the safest travel methods available.
  • Claustrophobia/agoraphobia. Airplane cabins trigger anxiety for people who can’t easily tolerate confined and/or densely crowded spaces.
  • Turbulence anxiety. The unpredictable nature of turbulence can create a sense of losing control, with the jarring physical sensations of takeoff and landing adding to the sense of vulnerability.
  • Acrophobia. In some cases, fear of heights exacerbates flying anxiety.
  • Traumatic experiences. Previous negative encounters with flying or other traumatic events can contribute to aviophobia.

People with generalized anxiety and other anxiety disorders are also more susceptible to developing a fear of flying.

How Do You Overcome the Fear of Flying?

Depending on your specific flying fears, an individualized treatment plan at Union Square Practice might include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT helps you challenge and restructure negative thought patterns and irrational beliefs about flying. This might include education about the science of flying to demystify air travel and offer a factual foundation for building effective coping mechanisms and increasing resilience to anxiety.
  • Mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and nonjudgmental awareness of your body’s stress responses can all empower you to take control of your anxiety as it emerges.
  • Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy. VRET creates a safe, controlled environment for gradual exposure to simulated flying experiences. This allows you to apply CBT and mindfulness strategies in a realistic setting before graduating to an actual flight.
  • Medication. The goal of therapy is to eliminate fear of flying or reduce it to a manageable level. In some cases, though, it can be good to have short-term anti-anxiety medications on hand. It can even help curb the anxiety to have this backup. At USP, we offer integrated therapy and psychiatry services so you have the stepping stones you need as you work to conquer your flying fears.
