Exploring Social Connection and Intimate Relationships: Reactions to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Partnerships

It’s Sunday night at a bar in NYC, and the NFL’s Buffalo Bills Mafia is out in full force. Packed in like sardines, the crowd is rowdy and energetic– fueled by anticipation, hope, and beer– and ready to watch the Buffalo Bills take on the Kansas City Chiefs. The stakes are high— the winner of this game goes on to have a chance to play in the Super Bowl; the loser’s season comes to an end.

Throughout the game, there are several rounds of the Bills fight song, sung to the tune of “Shout.” There are uproarious cheers when Josh Allen scores the first touchdown, putting the Bills up 9-0, and groans of frustration when Tyler Bass subsequently misses the extra point. But the most heartfelt and enthusiastic reactions were reserved for none other than Taylor Swift. Throughout the almost four hour broadcast, Swift appeared on screen for maybe a grand total of 30 seconds. But every time the camera panned to her in the spectators’ box, the bar erupted in a chorus of boos and jeers louder and more animated than any touchdown celebration or penalty protestation.

This reaction to Swift appearing at a Chiefs game is not specific to Bills fans at a NYC bar, but has been consistent and pervasive since Swift began regularly appearing at games in October 2023. What is it about Swift’s mere presence at a football game that inspires such fury among spectators? As Dr. Jonathan Fader of Union Square Practice and SportStrata asked in his appearance on Good Morning America last week, “why are we bothered by a woman having the spotlight?”

According to Dr. Fader, the answer lies within ourselves. Quoting retired NFL coach Urban Meyer, Dr. Fader suggested: “when you’re furious, get curious… Ask yourself why am I mad?” Why am I having negative thoughts? For some, it may be that football is a sacred sport – a social activity that fosters connection and can assuage feelings of burnout built up throughout the week. Perhaps these fans fear it will be tainted by the presence of a pop icon and her fans. Indeed, if there is a fan base that could rival the rowdiness of NFL fans, it’s the Swifties.

Still, one cannot help but see that the boo’s lobbied at Swift are rooted in the fact that she is a powerful woman taking the focus away from a national pastime played by men. In response, Dr. Fader offers a reframe even if you’re not a fan of Taylor Swift— how can you focus on the positive in her presence to find inspiration and motivation? For one, Taylor’s support of the Chiefs has led many young girls to start watching football, challenging gender stereotypes generally associated with the NFL. Indeed, many dads, including Robert People who goes by the user name @peoplescourt79, have taken to social media to address the hate lobbied at Taylor and, by extension, their daughters. In one post People warns: “Taylor Swift’s not going to see or hear any of that, but you know who will? Your daughters.” He goes on to say that the “juvenile hatred” shown to the pop star for simply appearing at a football game teaches young girls “to shrink themselves and reduce who they are because if they do anything more than that… they’re going to get a whole lot of hate.”

Dr. Fader further suggests we might be inspired by Taylor and Travis’s commitment to and sacrifices for each other. “These are two people at the top of their game… they’re sacrificing for each other, putting aside their strength to be there for each other. How can we do that in our own relationships?” It’s a good question: how can we hold our own strength and relinquish our ego to make room for others— whether they be a novice football fan, a friend or a partner, or a pop star?
