Chen Zhang is a mental health counselor and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation treatment coordinator; she received her Master’s degree in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at New York University after receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of Toronto. Chen Zhang is a mental health counselor who believes that an individual is more than their diagnosis and cluster of symptoms. Chen Zhang practices from a person-centered and multicultural-informed approach. She primarily practices from a cognitive-behavioral perspective, and incorporates techniques from dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment psychotherapy, mindfulness, and interpersonal therapy.

Chen has had experience working with adults from different age groups. As a mental health counselor, she has worked at community outpatient mental health clinic and private practice. She has experience working with depression, anxiety, interpersonal difficulties, trauma, self-esteem, emotional dysregulation, borderline personality disorder, culture-related adjustment issues, acculturation, and BIPOC. She has also worked as a responder in various suicide hotlines, including her role as a responder for a suicide hotline that supports University students that studied in Chinese post-secondary education.

Chen recognizes the roles that environment, system, culture, and relationships play in an individual’s well-being. Chen views psychotherapy as a collaborative process through which the therapist and the client work together to gain better understanding of how environment, system, culture, and relationships interact with an individual’s historical and present thoughts and emotions. Together, the therapist and client identify individualized treatment goals that match one’s needs and desires, and collaborate on designing an individualized path that matches a client’s needs.
